An Australian Icon: Wine Times, Hong Kong

When one thinks of the Margaret River region of Australia a few names spring to mind – none more so than the iconic winery Moss Wood who has been producing world class wines from the Cabernet Sauvignon grape, among others, since the 1970’s. With vines planted in 1969 and the first vintage in 1973, Moss Wood set out to pioneer winemaking in Western Australia and with the emergence of the now current owners Keith and Clare Mugford’s winemaking prowess in 1979 the winery has arguably become the benchmark for red wine production in the region.

Keith and Clare held a lunchtime audience with some of Hong Kong’s prominent wine media and sommeliers last week on a quick trip to Hong Kong on the way through to visit other cities around Asia. Wines were tasted and Hong Kong was introduced to wines from their most recently acquired vineyard Ribbon Vale. The vineyard itself was planted in 1977 by the then owner John James and, fortunately for the Mugford’s, their timely purchase allowed them to make a vintage right from the start with the first vintage made in 2000. Ribbon Vale wines from Moss Wood are far from ‘entry level’ – but do represent a more affordable wine and a more approachable wine at a younger age.

Moss Wood’s red wines are set for aging – although in the current climate it is very hard to find aged Australian wines on the market as they usually work on current vintages. Over lunch attendees were able to taste the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon (rated as exceptional in the Langton’s V classification). Other wines tasted included the Ribbon Vale Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2013, Ribbon Vale Cabernet Merlot 2011 plus the Moss Wood Chardonnay 2011 and the Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 2009.

Keith and Clare lauded recent vintages and the group also spoke at length about the vinery’s use of Stelvin closure – a closure widely used in Australia and one that Keith favours in an attempt to ensure that every bottle of Moss Wood reaches the drinker in its optimum condition. Cork taint is something that Moss Wood wants to avoid and, regardless of the perception of screw cap in Asia, the change from cork to screw cap at the turn of the millennium has had no effect on the sales of their wines worldwide.

As with any producer of Semillon Sauvignon Blanc in either the Margaret River region or Bordeaux, we had to ask why they did not make a straight Semillon but continued to blend it with Sauvignon Blanc! Of course, our misgivings were incorrect and they do make a straight Semillon and it is available in Hong Kong – so look out for our review of this wine coming soon as we are going to hook up with importer Summergate / Pudao wines and pick up a bottle in order to tell you what it’s like! The Ribbon Vale wines are approachable, affordable and easy drinking which makes them ideal for everyday restaurant wine lists – not as opposed to the Moss Wood wines which, although on the higher level of price point are well worth the money (but probably better to buy, cellar and pay corkage on a bottle or two than pay the mark up in a restaurant).

The Moss Wood Chardonnay 2011 comes in at HK$495 while the Moss Wood Cabernet 2009 is priced at HK$825. Ribbon Vale Semillon Sauvignon Blanc is HK$255 while the Ribbon Vale Cabernet Merlot is HK$375. All wines are available online from Pudao wines; for more information you can contact Kanas Lau on orderhk@pudaowines.com and more information can be found on their website www.pudaowines.com

New Mark Best’s Pei Modern restaurant in Four Season Hotel Sydney and Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Botrytis Semillon

Pei Modern, Mark Best’s internationally recognised modern bistro, has launched at Four Seasons Hotel Sydney last october on October 15th, 2014.

Roderick Eime from Global Travel Media went to Pei Modern for dinner and writes about his experience which includes a meringue with white chocolate ganache and blueberries paired with Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Botrytis Semillon.

After some cosmetic reworking, the space now houses Mark Best’s Pei Modern restaurant, a concept imported from his stylised namesake eatery in Melbourne along with team leader, Matt Germanchis. Best is well known in Sydney’s elite dining circles for his acclaimed establishment, Marque, in Crown Street.

Pei Modern can seat up to 180 guests in the new “elegant and contemporary space” that is just as suitable for a private evening meal as it is for business dining and lunches.

The menu, while simple, unpretentious and uncomplicated is heavy on culinary skill, use of local and seasonal produce well-presented and artfully prepared.

[…]

We finished with the famous spiced doughnuts, blood orange and whey butterscotch challenged by the meringue with white chocolate ganache and blueberries. This sweet medley was chased down with sticky Moss Wood Margaret River Botrytis Sémillon.

[…]

Settle in for a long lunch or a dash in for a quick and tasty bite. Pei Modern is as versatile as it is satisfying.”

Moss Wood 2013 Semillon and Ribbon Vale 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon in Ray Jordan Top 100 Whites November 6, 2014 The West Australian

Ray Jordan writes about Moss Wood 2013 Semillon and Moss Wood Ribbon Vale 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon in his Top 100 Whites 2014

2013 Moss Wood Semillon

This beautifully pure and expressive semillon from Margaret River is consistently one of the best of this variety from this region. It’s pure unoaked semillon and so reveals that beautiful lemon essence and light grassy character which are so appealing. It has a fine delicate acidity and plenty of lingering fruit held with a lipsmacking acid on the finish. 95/100

2013 Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Sauvignon Blanc Semillon

This is only just savvy dominant. The fruit is initially treated in stainless steel before about 40 per cent of the blend goes into French oak. The result is a stunning lift in complexity and mouth feel. Rich textured flavours of melon and fig with a creamy stone fruit splashed with a hint of grapefruit and citrus tang. 93/100

‘Splitting Hairs’ – vintage comments by Lisa Perrotti Brown featured in eRobertParker.com

Western Australia: Splitting Hairs

Given the recent run of great vintages (2007-2014) in Western Australia (WA), discussing the relative merits and shortcomings of vintage variation in these annual reports has developed into something of an exercise in splitting hairs. Indeed WA gets top marks in this respect for reliability, which – like its location way over on the other side of Australia from the bulk of wine production – sets it apart. I mention this because the eastern half of Australia has been on a vintage rollercoaster in recent years compared to WA’s straight-and-narrow path.

WA doesn’t produce a lot of entry-level grog, although there are some superb “value wines” at the lower to mid-price ranges and it is here where that reliable consistency of vintages really shines through. So, to be precise, the minor vintage variations become most discernable and important when analyzing wines in the upper echelons of wine quality and with notable ageing potential. This is where we hair-splitters can have a lot of fun looking at the subtle differences between the age-worthy paragons of three recent outstanding vintages in WA: 2010, 2011 and 2012.

2010

Four years on down the road reveals that the 2010 wines – reds in particular – are looking truly awesome. What a year for WA and Margaret River’s Bordeaux red varieties in particular! To elaborate, it’s the ripeness of tannins matched by fully manifested flavor compounds that are just starting to evolve into a beguiling array of tertiary characters that makes this vintage a slim-cut above the rest. So, if I had to split hairs, I would say this vintage is marginally better than the other two in this 2010-2012 trio of superlative viticultural years, with the 2012 vintage a close second. Followed closely again by 2011.

2011

Often compared to 2007, 2011 was similarly a hot one. When I was judging last year at the Margaret River Wine Show and again when looking at some of the tops reds that have just been released for this report, I noted that while the 2011s possess good concentrations of fruit, the flavor spectrums and phenolic ripeness are a little disappointing compared to 2010…but I am just splitting hairs here as the wines are generally excellent.

2012

The early budburst predicted an earlier-than-average 2012 harvest from the get-go. And make no bones about it, 2012 turned out to be a very hot year coupled with below-average rainfall and equating to a harvest period of between 2 to 3 weeks ahead of the regional average for both whites and reds. At this youthful stage for the best wines, I’m very impressed with the generosity of the whites (depending on picking dates) and the ripeness of tannins for the reds. While the palate weights of the Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines are elegantly ample, I’d like to see a little more complexity of flavor-spectrum, though this hair-splitting pronouncement may be redressed with bottle age and, if so, 2012 may rival 2010 in terms of quality for the red Bordeaux blends and may even surpass that outstanding vintage.

A Look Ahead at 2013 & 2014

2013

The summer started a bit late in 2013 and generally speaking this was a cooler year with some superb white wines in the offing and I’m thinking there will be some wonderfully complex and elegant top-tier reds coming from this vintage, too (when they’re released). Yields are generally down due to poor fruit set particularly affecting the white varieties. Acid levels are generally higher and pH levels lower for this vintage, which is not a bad thing considering this cut-down on the need for acidification! The particularly pronounced diurnal variation this vintage that is characteristic of this region made for some very cool nights that helped preserve acidity and slow ripening.

2014

Yet another hot, dry, hair-splittingly great vintage with lots of Marri blossoms to tempt the birds away from the fruit. Keep ’em coming WA!

THE MAGNIFICENT MARGARET RIVER & MOSS WOOD – Simone Baldwin – Healthy, Gorgeous and Tipsy

Few weeks ago our Indonesian Importer Commodore Trading and our Indonesian Distributor Boga Fine Wine came to visit us at Moss Wood.

We were very pleased to have them and Simone Baldwin, representing Boga Fine Wines, wrote a great article about the tasting night of Moss Wood wines we had with them on her stunning website and blog that we highly recommend you to check!

http://simonebaldwin.com/the-magnificent-margaret-river-moss-wood/

Here is the article:

THE MAGNIFICENT MARGARET RIVER & MOSS WOOD

Located in the south west corner of the country, close to the stunning beaches along the West Australian coastline where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet to bless Margaret River with a climate of cooling sea breezes, mild winters and sun soaked summers. Combine this maritime influence with ancient and unblemished soil and you have what is highly regarded as one of the finest landscapes in the world for growing premium grapes. It is a region with so much to offer, not just in the way of wine but its produce is pristine too.

Known for its long lived, beautifully structured Cabernet Sauvignon, captivating Chardonnay and delicious and very-moreish blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semilion, yet so generous is the climate and the soil that you have to be really hard pressed to find a wine from this favored area that isn’t good. Good is good enough for some but there are also a number of extremely gifted winemakers who strive for excellence and it is these names that give the Margaret River such an outstanding pedigree.

One extraordinary couple, who I have come to know and adore, is Keith and Clare Mugford, owners of Moss Wood. For the complete and fascinating account of Moss Wood and how it came to be the grand estate that it is today, read here.

Keith and Clare encapsulate the great traits of world-class winemakers, an intimate knowledge of their land, a relentless pursuit of excellence each and every year, unwavering dedication in both the vineyard and winery and hearts as big as Texas.

This generosity of spirit extended to their cellar from where they unearthed a bottle of 1979 and 1981 Cabernet Sauvignon. Pictured left, the labels were a bit worse for wear but the wine inside was well and truly intact, in fact, it was more than intact, it was glorious, multi-layered and very, very more-ish.

You cannot go wrong with a bottle of Moss Wood, I urge you to seek it out in your city or neighborhood. It is well distributed around the world, check here for representation in your country and please, please send us a photo of the raptured joy on your face after you have had your first sip.
