Moss Wood 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon – Edward Agg, The Cellar Post

A bottle of Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon wine laying on a table

Tense, tight, elegant. Could do with a stint in the cellar, or a long decant. Very good drinking.
Nose – Blackberry, redcurrant, and red plum. Leafy qualities, dry earth, and sweet tobacco with fine oak spice woven throughout. Plenty of vitality on display.
Palate – Medium-full, juicy, tight. Bright dark berry fruits, blackberry, black cherry, redcurrant, tight acidity, savoury spice, peppermint, cacao, and coffee, fine firm tannins, great length, elegant finish.

Moss Wood 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon – Ray Jordan, Business News

A bottle of Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon wine laying on a table

The latest Moss Wood cabernet has been released. And yet again it will it snuggly in the top echelon of new release Aussie cabernets.

It is a great wine from this great Margaret River estate. But it also a wine with a difference from recent releases, although it is still unmistakably Moss Wood.

The most striking thing is that this is one of the prettiest and perfumed of any Moss Wood I can recall. And that’s saying something because Moss Wood is known for its perfumes and aromatics as much as it is for its soft palate profile.

This one is also somewhat closed and restrained on the palate now with its firm thread of chalky tannin holding things tightly, to the point where I suspect it will be at least 20 years before it starts to reveal its true potential.

Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

Another simply sublime edition of this great wine. The volume of fruit was down almost 60% but the small berry influence has added even more intensity and depth, if that is possible with this wine. Interesting point of difference is that the combination is slightly different from previous vintages with 90% cabernet sauvignon, 3% cabernet franc and 7% petit verdot. The petit verdot certainly brings a darker berry influence with slightly firmer tannins. The aromas are a seductively perfumed with a combination of violet and redcurrant with a subtle black olive and mulberry. But the palate, oh the palate, is simply a joy. Smooth graceful lines with fine chalky tannins supply essential definition and support and harmoniously played oak. At the moment it is quite restrained but with age, a treasure trove of delights will be released. It is a wine destined for even greater things. Extraordinary.

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale 2022 Chardonnay – Ray Jordan, Business News

A bottle of Ribbon Vale wine laying on a table

This is a decidedly fresh and fragrant chardonnay that provides quite a point of difference to the standard Moss Wood. It; made in exactly the same way yet the Ribbon Vale vineyard speaks its individuality. It’s flavoursome with light stone fruit and a more subtle creamy vanilla bean character. The palate is generous and full, yet the nectarine and lime edges provide a tightening and focusing effect to take the wine through to a long finish. A little flick of acid on the finish, and there you have it, a mighty good wine for now or medium-term cellaring.

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale 2022 Elsa – Ray Jordan, Business News

A bottle of Ribbon Vale wine laying on a table

Sauvignon blanc that takes you into another zone. Full malolactic fermentation contributes to its rich generous creamy texture while the use of oak, with about 6% new, adds a defining lift through the palate. The nose offers all manner of things from melon, spices and pear with a varietal gooseberry note. On the palate you get into even more, with layers of honey and lemon curd quite dominant. It’s almost languid and effortless but gathers pace to a long finish.

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale 2022 Chardonnay – Fergal Gleeson, Great Wine Blog

A bottle of Ribbon Vale wine laying on a table

Ribbon Vale Chardonnay 2022 is a rich and complex wine.
No skinny Chardonnay here or attempt to emulate saline Chablis. This is Wilyabrup, Margaret River.
A full bodied white showing rich honey notes, peach, melon, nuts. 50% new oak adds to the layers.
Despite the fruit power, it is balanced and all pulled into line by a crisp finish. Hedonistic and pure pleasure.

A bottle of Ribbon Vale wine laying on a table

Many Australian winemakers have a vision for Sauvignon Blanc beyond making a $15 quaffer. Moss Wood are one of those!
Ribbon Vale Elsa 2022 is an elegant and sophisticated white wine.
It’s polished and balanced with flavours of lemon curd, honeysuckle and pear backed up with some richness because of fermentation and ageing in 6% new oak. It’s rounded rather than acidic and in keeping with Moss Wood tradition, it glides along with fruit generosity rather than edginess.
Has top shelf Chardonnay type class!

Moss Wood 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon – Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot.com

A bottle of Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon wine laying on a table

This 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon is an effortless vintage from Moss Wood, although slightly unusual with 7% Petit Verdot (higher than usual) and 3% Cabernet Franc (lower). It’s an old fashiooned claret style, reserved yet precise and focussed. It delivers blackcurrant, violets, red currant and old cedar aromas, French oak relaxed and assured with a mid-weight palate defined by its powerful core of impressive fruit. What I love most is the structure – very fine yet muscular tannins that are beautifully integrated and deliver a finish of extreme length. A classic in the making that is already drinking superbly, Petit Verdot structure adding additional tension that will see this star age extremely well.

Moss Wood 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon – Andrew Caillard, Wine Pilot.com – The Vintage Journal

Medium deep crimson. Beautiful blackcurrant, wax polish, hint panforte aromas with vanilla notes. Classical Margert River Cabernet with fresh blackcurrant, panforte flavours, fine grainy/ cedary tannins, underlying roasted chestnut oak notes and linear fresh acidity. Finishes firm and tight with a fine plume of tannin. This has lovely weight and balance with the perfect structure for aging. Drink 2026 – 2040+
