Moss Wood Ribbon Vale 2018 Merlot – Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot.com

This is always one of the country’s better Merlots and this latest vintage is no exception. Opens with lovely soft fruitcake aromas, plum pudding notes, spices, cloves, leather – the aromatics are most impressive. Then supple, balanced and with good length too – delicious. A fine Merlot, which will drink beautifully over the next three to four years, and probably longer but no need. There are not many better value Merlots than this one.

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon – Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot.com

This is a wine that shows good structure and plenty of complexity with some Cabernet austerity. Black olives and black fruits show admirable concentration with very fine tannins and some serious length rounding out the package. This needs time and while it could be drunk now it will be much better given some time, which should allow a little more generosity to emerge. It is the polar opposite to the Merlot – drink that while waiting for this Cabernet to come into its own.

Moss Wood 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon – Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot.com

There was some debate around a decade ago that this iconic Margaret River winery had lost a little of its glitter and that the wines were not what they once were. I was not quite as onboard with that as some. In fairness, it is not easy to remain at the pinnacle for a half century. But in recent years, the levels of quality they have attained have put to rest any such doubts. These guys now make some of the most thrilling wines in Margaret River and none better than their Cabernet. There are some world class Cabs made in the region and the MW sits with the very best. This vintage ranks with the finest of recent releases and there have been some crackers. To be honest, to look at this, I slipped it into a tasting which friends had organised, which was of some “super-second level” Bordeaux and great Margaret River Cabernets, from vintages as far back as 1990, right up to today. It will give an indication of how well it went if I tell you that one friend, not usually known for purchasing anything other than the great wines of Europe, rang the next day to say he had already picked up a six pack.

96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this is elegance personified. A low yielding and slightly cooler vintage, the grapes went into small open tanks for fermentation, with thrice daily hand-plunging. 15 days on skins and then pressed to tank before it was racked to French oak, 15% new. Over two years maturation. As mentioned, elegance personified. A silky combination of coiled power and finesse, this is a glorious Cabernet. Blackberries, spices, tobacco leaves, kid leather, violets, cigar box notes, aniseed and delicately integrated oak. There is a gossamer-like web of complexity weaving through the wine. Seamless, great length and cashmere tannins. This is a brilliant wine. Ten years, twenty years? How long have you got? If you are serious about great Australian Cabernet, this is a must for your cellar.

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale 2021 Chardonnay – Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot.com

This is the first release of a Chardonnay under Moss Wood’s Ribbon Vale label and much was expected, given the quality of the MW Chardy. As a vintage, the MW team have compared 2021 to the 1989 harvest, for those with long memories. The Mugfords had made Chardonnays from this vineyard in 2000 and 2001, but they were not released as they did not reach their standards. So the vines were removed and replaced – gasp, shock, horror – with Sauvignon Blanc. Planting trees to eventually form a wind break has assisted the fruit, although yields certainly still fall short of what can be achieved with Savvy. Nonetheless, it has returned to the vineyard. The grapes are made in the same manner as for the MW Chardonnay. Bunches go into the presses with the must and then to stainless steel for 24 hours settling. Racked to a second tank, partial fermentation and then transferred to French oak barrels, 25% new, to complete that ferment.

An alluring nose of peaches, stonefruits and gunflint. There is some early complexity, but very good oak integration. Spices, a hint of nuts and a little whiff of orange rind. A supple and silky texture with a flick of acidity and length, this is a chardonnay which is clean, full of flavour and interest. Drink now and for the next six years.

Moss Wood 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon – Fergal Gleeson, Great Wine Blog

A bottle of Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon wine laying on a table

Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 has a delicious pot pourri nose of red and black fruits.
This is the eight consecutive Moss Wood Cabernet I’ve tasted and many features are consistent- depth of flavour, drink ability, medium bodied weight, quality tannins, a bright refreshing finish.
Detail!
However every release expresses vintage conditions. In the case of 2020 there’s extra pepper and spice courtesy of a larger component of Petit Verdot- the final mix is 90% Cabernet, 3% Cab Franc and 7% PV.
It’s one of just 5 Australian Cabernets rated as ‘Exceptional’ by Langton’s Fine Wine based on provenance and resale value.
Moss Wood also has the finesse to enjoy now or in a few decades time.

Moss Wood 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon – Edward Agg, The Cellar Post

A bottle of Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon wine laying on a table

Tense, tight, elegant. Could do with a stint in the cellar, or a long decant. Very good drinking.
Nose – Blackberry, redcurrant, and red plum. Leafy qualities, dry earth, and sweet tobacco with fine oak spice woven throughout. Plenty of vitality on display.
Palate – Medium-full, juicy, tight. Bright dark berry fruits, blackberry, black cherry, redcurrant, tight acidity, savoury spice, peppermint, cacao, and coffee, fine firm tannins, great length, elegant finish.

Moss Wood 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon – Ray Jordan, Business News

A bottle of Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon wine laying on a table

The latest Moss Wood cabernet has been released. And yet again it will it snuggly in the top echelon of new release Aussie cabernets.

It is a great wine from this great Margaret River estate. But it also a wine with a difference from recent releases, although it is still unmistakably Moss Wood.

The most striking thing is that this is one of the prettiest and perfumed of any Moss Wood I can recall. And that’s saying something because Moss Wood is known for its perfumes and aromatics as much as it is for its soft palate profile.

This one is also somewhat closed and restrained on the palate now with its firm thread of chalky tannin holding things tightly, to the point where I suspect it will be at least 20 years before it starts to reveal its true potential.

Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

Another simply sublime edition of this great wine. The volume of fruit was down almost 60% but the small berry influence has added even more intensity and depth, if that is possible with this wine. Interesting point of difference is that the combination is slightly different from previous vintages with 90% cabernet sauvignon, 3% cabernet franc and 7% petit verdot. The petit verdot certainly brings a darker berry influence with slightly firmer tannins. The aromas are a seductively perfumed with a combination of violet and redcurrant with a subtle black olive and mulberry. But the palate, oh the palate, is simply a joy. Smooth graceful lines with fine chalky tannins supply essential definition and support and harmoniously played oak. At the moment it is quite restrained but with age, a treasure trove of delights will be released. It is a wine destined for even greater things. Extraordinary.

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale 2022 Chardonnay – Ray Jordan, Business News

A bottle of Ribbon Vale wine laying on a table

This is a decidedly fresh and fragrant chardonnay that provides quite a point of difference to the standard Moss Wood. It; made in exactly the same way yet the Ribbon Vale vineyard speaks its individuality. It’s flavoursome with light stone fruit and a more subtle creamy vanilla bean character. The palate is generous and full, yet the nectarine and lime edges provide a tightening and focusing effect to take the wine through to a long finish. A little flick of acid on the finish, and there you have it, a mighty good wine for now or medium-term cellaring.
