Moss Wood Ribbon Vale 2018 Merlot – Augus Hughson, Wine Pilot.com

Moss Wood’s Ribbon Vale vineyard is planted close to the original estate in Wilyabrup although always creates more elegant wines thanks to its slightly higher and south facing vineyards, which is not a bad thing.

This is classic merlot in many ways – good colour but not especially deep and then it’s instantly bursting with fragrant redcurrant, cedar and dried herb fruits well matched to largely old oak. 5% cabernet franc has also provided a pretty leafy edge. The palate is then dry, fleshy and juicy – waves of red and black fruits are supported by silky tannins which are beautifully balanced before a long and bright finish. It is already open for business and well suited to roast duck or chicken.

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon – Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot.com

Over the last five years Moss Wood’s Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon has been slowly but surely climbing the quality ladder, and it’s got some big shoes to fill at this famous estate. Ribbon Vale traditionally provides a more elegant and fragrant take on the Moss Wood style – pretty wines but still with backbone – Moss Wood meets Margaux for Bordeaux fans.

This wine is 96% cabernet sauvignon with a sprinkling of merlot and cabernet franc and again it has good but not massive colour showing the trademark lighter touch at Moss Wood. It is quite big and ripe for this label – lashings of mulberry and blackcurrant fruits with attractive leather and cedar, but it is the sweet fruit here that really stands out. The palate is then fleshy and open knit with those dark fruits now matched by gravelly complexity plus well balanced moderate tannins helping to drive a very long finish. It is a crowd pleasing Ribbon Vale for sure that is hard not to love and also has good cellaring potential, although why bother when it is drinking so well right now.

Moss Wood 2020 Semillon – Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot.com

There is a tendency to ignore any Semillon which does not hail from the Hunter Valley (and sadly, a tendency to ignore most of those as well), but the reality is that there are some very fine, though different, examples from a number of other regions, including Margaret River. Moss Wood’s Semillon has long snuck under the radar for most, though it has a loyal core of supporters, justly so.

A crisp style, with hay, nettle and honey notes. Honey and grass – sounds like a great name for a 70s rock band. Lovely texture, good acidity and fine length. A wine with focus and pleasing style, with a good four to five years ahead of it and very different to what we have come to expect from the Hunter.

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale 2018 Merlot – Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot.com

This is always one of the country’s better Merlots and this latest vintage is no exception. Opens with lovely soft fruitcake aromas, plum pudding notes, spices, cloves, leather – the aromatics are most impressive. Then supple, balanced and with good length too – delicious. A fine Merlot, which will drink beautifully over the next three to four years, and probably longer but no need. There are not many better value Merlots than this one.

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon – Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot.com

This is a wine that shows good structure and plenty of complexity with some Cabernet austerity. Black olives and black fruits show admirable concentration with very fine tannins and some serious length rounding out the package. This needs time and while it could be drunk now it will be much better given some time, which should allow a little more generosity to emerge. It is the polar opposite to the Merlot – drink that while waiting for this Cabernet to come into its own.

Moss Wood 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon – Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot.com

There was some debate around a decade ago that this iconic Margaret River winery had lost a little of its glitter and that the wines were not what they once were. I was not quite as onboard with that as some. In fairness, it is not easy to remain at the pinnacle for a half century. But in recent years, the levels of quality they have attained have put to rest any such doubts. These guys now make some of the most thrilling wines in Margaret River and none better than their Cabernet. There are some world class Cabs made in the region and the MW sits with the very best. This vintage ranks with the finest of recent releases and there have been some crackers. To be honest, to look at this, I slipped it into a tasting which friends had organised, which was of some “super-second level” Bordeaux and great Margaret River Cabernets, from vintages as far back as 1990, right up to today. It will give an indication of how well it went if I tell you that one friend, not usually known for purchasing anything other than the great wines of Europe, rang the next day to say he had already picked up a six pack.

96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this is elegance personified. A low yielding and slightly cooler vintage, the grapes went into small open tanks for fermentation, with thrice daily hand-plunging. 15 days on skins and then pressed to tank before it was racked to French oak, 15% new. Over two years maturation. As mentioned, elegance personified. A silky combination of coiled power and finesse, this is a glorious Cabernet. Blackberries, spices, tobacco leaves, kid leather, violets, cigar box notes, aniseed and delicately integrated oak. There is a gossamer-like web of complexity weaving through the wine. Seamless, great length and cashmere tannins. This is a brilliant wine. Ten years, twenty years? How long have you got? If you are serious about great Australian Cabernet, this is a must for your cellar.

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale 2021 Chardonnay – Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot.com

This is the first release of a Chardonnay under Moss Wood’s Ribbon Vale label and much was expected, given the quality of the MW Chardy. As a vintage, the MW team have compared 2021 to the 1989 harvest, for those with long memories. The Mugfords had made Chardonnays from this vineyard in 2000 and 2001, but they were not released as they did not reach their standards. So the vines were removed and replaced – gasp, shock, horror – with Sauvignon Blanc. Planting trees to eventually form a wind break has assisted the fruit, although yields certainly still fall short of what can be achieved with Savvy. Nonetheless, it has returned to the vineyard. The grapes are made in the same manner as for the MW Chardonnay. Bunches go into the presses with the must and then to stainless steel for 24 hours settling. Racked to a second tank, partial fermentation and then transferred to French oak barrels, 25% new, to complete that ferment.

An alluring nose of peaches, stonefruits and gunflint. There is some early complexity, but very good oak integration. Spices, a hint of nuts and a little whiff of orange rind. A supple and silky texture with a flick of acidity and length, this is a chardonnay which is clean, full of flavour and interest. Drink now and for the next six years.

Moss Wood 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon – Fergal Gleeson, Great Wine Blog

A bottle of Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon wine laying on a table

Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 has a delicious pot pourri nose of red and black fruits.
This is the eight consecutive Moss Wood Cabernet I’ve tasted and many features are consistent- depth of flavour, drink ability, medium bodied weight, quality tannins, a bright refreshing finish.
Detail!
However every release expresses vintage conditions. In the case of 2020 there’s extra pepper and spice courtesy of a larger component of Petit Verdot- the final mix is 90% Cabernet, 3% Cab Franc and 7% PV.
It’s one of just 5 Australian Cabernets rated as ‘Exceptional’ by Langton’s Fine Wine based on provenance and resale value.
Moss Wood also has the finesse to enjoy now or in a few decades time.
