Moss Wood 2018 Pinot Noir – Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot
You don’t get a hell of a lot of pinot noir in Margaret River. So you’ve got to hand it to the Moss Wood team as they persevere with what is a very unique style for Australian pinot. It’s not in the typical pretty and fruity style. It’s more savoury and brooding, and generally needs a little time to show its earthy best.
The 2018 Margaret River vintage, which is getting rave reviews, has created a slightly more approachable Moss Wood style with raspberry and rose petal aromas plus an attractive fennel seed edge supported by a solid dose of French oak. It is then plush and fleshy on the palate – dried raspberry fruit flavours and winter greens are balanced by moderate acidity that provides a long and silky finish. It’s balanced and supple which makes for a delicious drink with some grainy tannins suggested moderate ageing potential. Match it up with duck pancakes and enjoy.
