Moss Wood 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon – James Suckling, jamessuckling.com
A stylish edition of regal Margaret River cabernet that has plenty of ripe dark cherries and blackcurrants as well as cedar oak, violets, hints of chocolate, terracotta, bay leaf and some gentle gravelly notes. The ripe tannins deliver a smooth and seamless palate that climbs in layers of complex flavors.…

Delicately aromatic merlot with lifted spice, floral and red berry flavours. A supple, elegant red that’s been made with a light touch. Can be enjoyed now but promises to develop well in bottle. Published April 12th, 2018

Deep red colour with a strong purple tint. The bouquet is savoury, complex and yet still youthful, with raspberry undertones and hints of foresty, earthy, undergrowth savouriness. This continues on the palate which is full-bodied, softly-textured and fleshy despite a plentiful load of tannin. The weight and gravitas of this…

Deep red/purple colour, with a lightly toasty bouquet featuring some smoky oak, quickly giving way to violet and blackberry aromas with a sprinkling of dried herbs; the palate intense and fresh, clean and lively, with brilliant depth of dark and red berry fruit flavours. The acidity is refreshing on the…

Magnificent Cabernet from one of the Margaret River region’s greatest wineries. Winemaker and proprietor Keith Mugford is in his 40th vintage. That’s consistency! For me the new release is even better than the celebrated 2014. Just about perfect balance of fruit & savoury character and well integrated tannin. Drinks very…
Read ReviewMoss Wood 2017 Semillon – John Lewis, Newcastle Herald
MossWood 2017 Margaret River Semillon has more minerality than its Hunter counterparts, but is fine drinking with green-tinted straw hues, gooseberry scents and crisp grapefruit front-palate flavour. Lime zest, mineral and lemon curd meld on the middle palate and the finish has slatey acid. It’s at mosswood.com.au and fine wine…

IN THEIR early plantings, the Pannells couldn’t get chardonnay cuttings and in 1972 they defied the conventional wisdom favouring riesling and put in semillon. In 1976 a tiny batch of wine was oak barrel-fermented and quickly replaced from the 1977 vintage to the present by semillon made in classic Hunter…

IN 1976 the Pannells were among the first in Margaret River to plant chardonnay – with cabernet sauvignon, the varieties on which the region’s subsequent fame is based. Earlier in 1973 Moss Wood trail-blazed by planting pinot noir vines, which produced the first wine in 1977. The Mugfords love their…

Deep, youthful red/purple colour with a shy, elusive nose. There are subtle violet and red fruit scents, and no greener notes, while the palate is gloriously deep, intense, powerfully structured and profound. The tannins and fruit are superbly integrated and the finish rolls on and on with great panache. There’s…

For the Margaret River wine region’s 50th anniversary, Vasse Felix worked with the local wineries association to present a retrospective tasting of cabernet sauvignon. Here are some standouts among the older cabernets. Moss Wood 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Warmer than the 2004s, this wine’s black fruit still has a contrast of…

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Ribbon Vale Vineyard Merlot offers notes of warm mulberries, stewed plums, Christmas cake and blueberry compote with underlying sage, damp earth and cedar nuances. Medium-bodied it gives a good concentration of plum and earthy flavors with a medium level of velvety tannins, crisp acid…

Imposing bright straw-green colour; the complexity of the bouquet is immediately obvious with crushed citrus leaves, wood smoke and spice, not bad for an unwooded semillon. Its raw power on the palate is formidable, as is the acidity. Will always dance to the beat of its own drum – like…

Has a rapier acid thrust that is crisp lean and refreshing. It tastes of granny smith apples and white grapefruit. Look elsewhere if you like tropical fruit salad flavours in your Sauvignon. This is much svelter. There’s a nice texture courtesy of some barrel ageing. Classy effort.

Moss Wood celebrate the 40th birthday of their Semillon this year so it’s fitting that they’ve delivered something special. It’s very approachable for a young Sem with lemon and lemongrass flavours and taste of honey. Much more going on in the glass than an equivalent Hunter Semillon at this stage. No…

Almost ethereal cabernet sauvignon in an elegant rather than blockbuster style with cassis, new leather, spice, subtle dried herb and smoky oak flavours. A wine of restrained power with obvious cellaring potential – it opened up magnificently in the glass and deserves to be decanted. 19/12/2017 Drink 2018 to 2025
