Brilliant ruby red. Assertive aromas of raspberry and cherry preserves complicated by succulent herbs and fresh rose. Supple and appealingly sweet with soft red berry preserve flavours turning firmer with air and picking up a floral pastille nuance. Finishes with very good breadth and clarity and silky, fully absorbed tannins.

Light yellow. Lemon zest, poached pear and honeysuckle on the intensely perfumed nose. Juicy citrus, pit and orchard fruit flavours are firmed by dusty minerality, which adds refreshing lift and incise cut. Dry, stony and pure, showing a suave blend of power and vivacity and excellent finishing clarity.

Inky ruby. Sexy dark berry and candied cherry scents are given depth by suave oak spice, vanilla and fruitcake nuances. Sweet cassis and blackberry flavours show excellent clarity, along with suggestions of anise and mocha. Gains sweetness with air, taking on floral pastille and vanilla qualities that carry through a long, clinging, lightly…

These blondes will leave you breathless – Whitey picks three extreme blondes in the wild south-west. Now we’re talkin’. This wine bears no resemblance at all to Hunter Valley Semillon or Niewzillun Savvy-b. The dark methoxypyrazine/tomato-leaf acridity of the Sauvignon is so mellow here that it seems simply to add…

Blue Ribbon This is only just savvy dominant. The fruit is initially treated in stainless steel before about 40 percent of the blend goes into French oak. The result is a stunning lift in complexity and mouthfeel. This is a superb wine showing the benefits of older vines, some winemaking…

A generous and forward bouquet of sweet and ripe Sauvignon Blanc then gently waxy Semillon – ripe, fresh and baked peaches, pear and apple aromas, medium complexity and quite inviting. On the palate – dry, crisp and firm with youthful acidity followed with the flavors of sweet apple and peach…

It’s a cliche to comment that Margaret River does better with merlot than any other Australian region: here cassis and black olive are woven through the medium-bodied palate, ripe tannins and oak present in precisely the right amounts. Drink to 2031.

A very attractive bouquet of dark red fruits centering on Doris plum then blackberry fruits – all wrapped up in a blanket of toasty oak – but not too much; medium complexity; there is also a dense dark rose layer which adds complexity and a feminine charm; On the palate…

Quite the classic bouquet of a Bordeaux blend with its New World twist – generous and masculine bouquet of fresh and poached black and red fruits with a strong reminder of oak – toasted wood, brown spices and baked vanilla; medium plus complexity and quite forward. On the palate -…

Right in the heartland of Margaret River cabernet merlot style, with multiple layers of blackcurrant, redcurrant, black olive and briar characters, the texture and structure based in large part on the tannins. Drink to 2026.

Ironically, Moss Wood’s Margaret River Pinot Noir has recovered some of its past glory in the face of its Mornington Peninsula sibling; this really does have correct varietal fruit expression, even if it is on the generous, ripe fruit end of the spectrum; the tannin and oak management cannot be…

Margaret River Semillon has a more welcoming nature than Hunter Valley Semillon when young, invoking thoughts of standing at a breakfast buffet in a top Asian hotel laden with guava, passionfruit, pineapple (sweeter than any domestic version) and custard apple. It’s all a trick of course, but you will enjoy…

Lots of peaches and citrus aromas especially sweet peach and baked lemon with a touch of grapefruit, then a drift of hay and mild grassy notes – so there is a measure of complexity here. On the palate – dry, crisp, lively and punchy – there is plenty of citrus…

Moss Wood 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon seems a riper vintage than 2010, something I prefer in Margaret River cabernets in general. This one is packed full of red and dark berry aromas with some lovely spice. This translates on the palate with long, supple flavours again with red and black currant.…
